On the 21st of July, 2015 at the FUW office at the Royal Welsh Show, a meeting took place which included Ofcom and representatives from the MNO (mobile network operators EE, O., Three and Vodafone) to discuss plans for improvement in the rural areas of Wales.  Elinor Williams (Ofcom) welcomed everyone to the meeting including Vodaphone representative Graham Dunn, O2 representative Paul James, EE representative Alex Jackman and Three representative Justin Kempley.

All 4 speakers gave a short presentation followed by a question and answer session.

One of the points noted was that a legal agreement has been reached between the providers to ensure a substantial amount of money is available to improve the mobile phone infrastructure by 2017 and to ensure voice and text services are available by the providers to 90% of remote areas in the UK by 2017.

Another key point was that a “not spot” may not require a mast.  New technology was constantly being developed.

More details regarding the meeting are available  (please let me know).

Summary

We have 2 choices to “explore”.

1.  Do nothing and hope Blaenau Tywi is not in the 10% which will not have been enabled by 2017.

2.  Look at developing our own mast using funding from the proposed “Connectivity” funding stream of the RDP.

  1. David Moloney says:

    90% sounds very impressive.
    10% does not.

You know we will be in that 10%. Hence no confirmed decision regarding the area.
It isn’t just Wales that struggle. Yorkshire Moors, Plymouth Downs and Moors.

They know very well their projected plans for the next 2 years and if they didnt announce our signal improvement then it ain’t gonna improve IMO 🙁
