I took the Blaenau Tywi book to my mother in Loughor today and she was absolutely thrilled with it. Many places mentioned in the book were familiar to her and there was a mention of a family ancestor, Deio Ajax – he was a shepherd who apparently was the inspiration for a Welsh poem ‘The old shepherd of Blaenycothi ‘ by Gwili.”

Patrwm o brosiect, sy’n cyflwyno hanes ardal drwy gyfrwng ei henwau, yw hwn, patrwm i wirfoddolwyr eraill ei efelychu. Mae’r rhagair yn ymddiheuro na fu modd cynnwys pob fferm oherwydd cyfyngiadau amser a nifer y gwirfoddolwyr, ond mae’n wyrthiol bod y grŵp wedi llwyddo i gyflawni cymaint.

Dyna’r esgyrn. Byddai’r rheini’n ddigon i haeddu canmoliaeth eithafol. Ond mae’r cnawd a roddir ar yr esgyrn yn rhyfeddol. Mae diwyg y gyfrol yn ysblennydd, yn llawn lluniau lliw pwrpasol: lluniau camera ardderchog, atgynyrchiadau o ddogfennau a mapiau ac o luniau artistiaid, a’r cyfan wedi ei ddylunio’n hardd ar dudalennau digon mawr. O na bai cyfrol debyg ar gyfer pob ardal!

Trysor o gyfrol. Cyforiog o wybodaeth ddiddorol, lluniau a mapiau, a’r cyfan wedi eu cyflwyno’n effeithiol mewn diwyg glân. Llongyfarchiadau ar gampwaith!

  4. Norman "Bud" Roderick says:

On behalf of the Roderick family I want to thank you for the beautiful edition of NAMES IN THE LANDSCAPE that your mother presented to us during our recent visit to CIL-Y-CWM. No words can describe the joy and peace we experienced on our visit to your village and beautiful valley. Actually visiting the Lamb House that my great grandparents had occupied and entering the church where they were married was especially meaningful since that very day was our 60th wedding anniversary. It meant a great deal to speak with your mother and to learn she had lived her whole life in the village. We were warmly received by Mrs. Davis who now lives in the Lamb House and enjoyed seeing their lovely garden and the shop in back of the house. There were ten of us from five different US states and our visit to Wales will forever be first on our list of memorable occasions. Mr. Selwyn Walters did a wonderful job researching the Roderick family and we were pleased to have him accompany us on our visit. Thank you again for your thoughtfulness, this beautiful book will have a very special place in the archives of our family.

Dyma’r llyfr mwyaf diddorol a ddaeth i’m llaw ers tro byd … fel y dywedodd Islwyn Ffowc Elis yn un o’i gyfrolau “Cymdogion da sy’n gwneud cymdogaeth dda”.
Bydd y gyfrol hon yn gyfraniad at gyrraedd y nod yna, Mae bod yn ymwybodol o hanes cymdogaeth yn ddolen holl bwysig … Daeth llu mawr o atgofion imi wrth droi dudalennau’r gyfrol ac yn arbennig diwrnod Hela Calennig. Cofio galw yn y bore bach yn Ty’nwaun a Phenfedw a gorffen yn Ochr Fforest erbyn canol dydd a basned o gawl yn fy nisgwyl a chofio casglu digon o arian i brynu fy mhâr cyntaf o esgidiau hoelion!

‘Llongyfarchiadau ar gyfrol mor ddeniadol. Wedi treulio gweddill y noson yn ei bodio a’i hedmygu. Gobeithio y bydd y gwaith yn ysbrydoliaeth i gymunedau eraill ymgymryd â’r her. Estyn fy llongyfarchiadau a’m diolch i’r criw a fu wrthi mor ddiwyd.’

What a beautifully produced book. A wealth of fascinating information, of particular interest the items mentioned which cover the forestry plantations such as Cwm Rhaeadr.
Thanks to those who thought a copy should go for the staff who worked for ‘Forestry Commission Wales’, it will be a valuable addition to our library.

  9. Amanda Price says:

A fascinating book, beautifully illustrated and invaluable for the social and family historian. I have read it from cover to cover already!
    Llyfr arbennig.

  10. Alastair Aberdare says:

Congratulations to all involved in producing this really splendid volume. The quality of the design and production is superb, with lots of excellent photos (and maps) to complement the fascinating information in the text. As someone whose eye seems to be uncannily drawn to typos and misprints, I am also greatly impressed by the standard of proof-reading. I am delighted to possess this book, and expect to refer to it often. Well done indeed to the “Editorial Group”, Sara, Handel and Dafydd, the main photographer, Chris, and to everyone else in the team for their contributions to such an outstanding and worthwhile result – not forgetting the various local providers of hospitality mentioned in the acknowledgements!

  11. John B. Lewis says:

Campwaith o gyfrol a trysor i bawb yn y fro sydd a diddordeb mewn hanes.

  12. Jane Evans says:

Bendigedig! Within minutes of arriving home this evening my copy was delivered and I haven’t put the book down since. It’s fascinating and a wonderful broad addition to the limited research I have done on Abercamlais.
Here’s to the next volume and if you want some more help please ask.
    Thank you
    Jane

We should just like to convey our appreciation to the authors of and contributors to the book ‘Blaenau Tywi..Names in the Landscape’. They have produced an important document of the history of the area, in a beautifully presented and professional format. Now that registration of a property in the Land Registry is sufficient to prove ownership, it means people like us who have moved here recently, no longer have the chance to ask for old deeds or plans. This book serves to whet our appetite for more information, and it would be good to think that in years to come there will be a volime 2 . Meanwhile we are very much in debt to the instigators of this work.

    Diolch yn fawr

Mike and Stella , Dol- Gynon. (and we should still love to know who’Cynon’ was)

    • Sara Fox says:

      Dear Mike & Stella,
thank you for your kind comments, it makes everyone’s hard work worthwhile! It would be great to identify some of the personal names like Cynon recorded in the names of the farms and fields,
      Sara Fox
