Rhandirmwyn
River Tywi at Rhandirmwyn
Rhandirmwyn is situated in the Upper Towi Valley - one of the most beautiful areas in Wales. Lead mining in and around Rhandirmwyn during the 18th and 19th centuries first opened this part of the Valley up to outside influence when Cornish miners came and worked in the mines. Mining continued, albeit sporadically, until the early 1930s. - but it was not until 1968 that the road became more than just a track, when work on the Llyn Brianne Dam and reservoir began.
The population of Rhandirmwyn is approximately 150, half of which are native Welsh speakers - a high proportion too are retired, but encouragingly, there are now many young children in the Valley. Parents see the Valley as a clean and safe environment in which to bring up children.
Modern telecommunications too have now made it possible for people in this area to work from home, in an interesting return to cottage industries.
Rhandirmywn Post Office
Rhandirmwyn has a well-stocked village shop (organic produce available too!) and Post Office that admirably serves the immediate needs of the homes in the area, although always finding it difficult competing with the larger super-markets further a field. Nevertheless they too, cater for the community via the Internet - villagers or holiday-home owners alike can order provisions to be delivered or be ready for ones arrival. Why not try them out! - scriberod@clara.net
The Royal Oak, one of two pubs within our village, dates from the 18th century.
