Dafydd Dafis was the Rhandirmwyn School Headmaster until it closed in 1969. He however remained in Rhandirmwyn until his passing in 2012.
He was a fine naturalist, botanist and published many books and articles on flowers in mainly the Welsh language. He was also involved in the kite protection programme with Captain and Irene Vaughan, Rhandirmwyn.
Dafydd Dafis did much for the environment also and was involved in opposing major schemes on Elenydd and Mynydd Mallaen. In the 1960’s he was the secretary of the group opposing the construction of Llyn Brianne reservoir in the upper Tywi Valley and although they were fighting a losing battle from the start they succeeded in preventing the construction of a new roadway through the beautiful Doethie Valley which would have been disastrous.
He also lead opposition to the proposed overhead cables from the Hydro-electric Turbine scheme at Llyn Brianne across Mynydd Mallaen to Llandovery.
It is intended to make this an annual event and will hopefully be a fitting tribute to a man who helped preserve our countryside. Iolo Williams was a personal friend of Dafydd and they did a number of television programmes together. It was natural therefor to ask him to be the first speaker at this event. The lecture will be mainly in English and any Welsh spoken will be translated contemporaneously via intercom system.
